Springfield once had a number of railroads serving the city, including Chicago & Alton Railroad (C&A) mainline and secondary line, a Wabash Railroad mainline, a Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) secondary line, a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) branch line, an Illinois Central Railroad (IC) secondary line, a Chicago & Illinois Midland Railway (C&IM) line, as well as lines of the Illinois Terminal Railroad (ITC). Today, the C&NW and B&O have been abandoned. The former C&A mainline is now owned by Union Pacific Railroad. The former C&IM and portions of the former IC are owned by Illinois & Midland Railroad, while Canadian National Railway owns the remaining portion of the IC. The Wabash has become part of the Norfolk Southern Railway, and the C&A branch line is now owned by CPKC.
