Merriam Junction was once the crossing of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway mainlines. Today, Union Pacific Railroad operates the former Omaha Road mainline, as well as the M&StL south towards Jordan. The remainder of the M&StL is abandoned, with plans in the works to convert it to a trail.
