Appleton was once a major industrial city, located along the Fox River. The city was served by a number of railroads, including two mainlines of the Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW), a secondary line of the Soo Line and a secondary line of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road). Today, Canadian National Railway and the Fox Valley & Lake Superior Rail System operate the remaining trackage in the city.
