South Elgin once had a number of railroad lines, including an Illinois Central Railroad (IC) mainline, a Chicago & North Western Railway secondary line, a branch of the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad (CA&E) and a streetcar line of the Aurora, Elgin and Fox River Electric Company (AE&FRE). Today, Canadian National Railway operates the former IC, while Union Pacific Railroad operates the former C&NW. The CA&E and portions of the AE&FRE have been converted to trail use.
