Pekin once had five railroads, including a Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) secondary line, a Chicago & Alton Railroad (C&A) branch line, an Illinois Central Railroad (IC) secondary line, a Chicago & Illinois Midland Railway (C&IM) line as well as lines of the Peoria & Pekin Union Railway (PPU). Today, the C&NW is owned by Union Pacific Railroad, the IC is owned by Canadian National Railway and the C&A is abandoned. In addition, the Illinois & Midland Railroad owns the former C&IM and the PPU continues to operate.
