North Chicago once had a Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) mainline, an Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway (EJ&E) mainline and a Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad (CNS&M) line. Today, the C&NW is owned by Union Pacific Railroad, and the EJ&E is owned by Canadian National Railway. The CNS&M line has become part of a trail.
