Normal once had several railroads serving the city, including a mainline of the Chicago & Alton Railway (C&A), a mainline of the Illinois Central Railroad (IC), a mainline of the Lake Erie & Western Railroad (LE&W) and the Peoria & Eastern Division of the Big Four Railroad, later New York Central Railroad (NYC). Today, Union Pacific Railroad operates the former C&A, while the IC and NYC have largely been abandoned. The former LE&W is owned by Norfolk Southern Railway.
