Monroe once had a Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) secondary line and an Illinois Central Railroad (IC) branch line. Today, the former Milwaukee Road is owned by the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad east of the town, while west of the town it is part of the Cheese Country Trail. The former IC is now part of the Badger State Trail.
