McClelland originally had a Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW) mainline. In the early 1950s, the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) constructed a new cutoff for their mainline, joining the existing CGW tracks in the town. Today, Iowa Interstate Railroad owns the line, while the former CGW heading northeast from the town has been abandoned.
