Hancock originally had a Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) branch line. In the early 1950s, the Rock Island constructed a new cutoff for their mainline through the town. Today, Iowa Interstate Railroad owns the mainline and a short portion of the branch line.
