Freeport once had a number of railroads, including two Illinois Central Railroad (IC) mainlines, an IC branch line, a Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) secondary line, and a Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) secondary line. Today, Canadian National Railway owns the east/west IC mainline, while the north/south mainline has been abandoned. The IC branch line is now part of the Jane Addams Trail, and the C&NW line is now part of the Pecatonica Prairie Path. The Milwaukee Road is largely abandoned.
