In 1868, the Rockford, Rock Island & St. Louis Railroad Company (RRI&StL) constructed a portion of new railroad between Orion, Illinois and Rio, Illinois as part of a larger 155-mile project to construct a line between Orion and Beardstown, Illinois.  In 1873, the Orion & Minersville Railroad Company (O&M) constructed 8 miles of new railroad between Orion, Illinois and Minersville, Illinois; near present day Colona.  The same year, the RRI&StL constructed an additional one mile of railroad from Colona to Minerstown.  The two railroads were consolidated into the St. Louis, Rock Island & Chicago Railway (StLRI&C) in 1876.  In 1877, the StLRI&C constructed an additional four miles of railroad from Colona to Barstow.  The StLRI&C was operated under lease of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q).  The CB&Q was beginning to construct an extensive network of railroad lines, extending westwards from Chicago.  The StLRI&C was merged into the CB&Q in 1899.  This line provided a connection between CB&Q lines in northwest Illinois and Galesburg, which was a major railroad hub for the railroad.  In 1970, the CB&Q was merged with the Northern Pacific Railway and the Great Northern Railway to form Burlington Northern Railroad (BN).  In 1996, BN merged with Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to form BNSF Railway.  BNSF currently operates the line as part of the Barstow Subdivision.

Located in Colona, this through plate bridge carries the former CB&Q across the Hennepin Canal and Hennepin Canal Parkway Trail. Between 1890 and 1907, the United States Government constructed the Illinois & Mississippi Canal, later renamed the Hennepin Canal, to connect the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The new canal and feeder canal would require eight railroad bridges and sixty-three roadway bridges. Between 1903 and 1904, significant portions of the canal would be constructed in Colona, and a bridge carrying the CB&Q would be required. After discussions about possibly realigning the railroad, the United States Government reached an agreement with the CB&Q to construct a new bridge, and construction on the bridge was completed in late 1904. The bridge consists of a 82-foot single track through plate girder span, set onto concrete abutments. The girder span was fabricated by the Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Company, which was a moderate sized fabricator of bridges. This bridge utilizes a standard CB&Q design, with deep tapered edges and a floor constructed of parallel floorbeams. This style of bridge was commonly used by railroads throughout the United States, as it was durable and easy to construct. Overall, the bridge appears to be in fair condition, with no significant deterioration noted. The author has ranked this bridge as being locally significant, due to the common design.
