Carlisle was a major hub for the Rock Island, who had lines leading towards Kansas City and Indianola from here, with a branch to Winterset splitting at Summerset.
Today, Indianola to Carlisle is a trail, while the Winterset branch is gone, but the KC line is a Union Pacific Mainline.
