Buchanan County is located in east central Iowa. It is named for James Buchanan, a former United States President.
The seat and largest city is Independence. The Wapsipinicon River runs through the county.
Buchanan County borders Clayton, Fayette, Delaware, Linn, Benton, Black Hawk and Bremer Counties.
Main highways through the county include I-380, US-20, IA-27, IA-150, IA-187 and IA-281.
